What Is Inpatient Rehab?

Residential addiction treatment, also known as inpatient rehab, is a live-in program where clients receive 24/7 medical supervision and evidence-based therapies in a distraction-free environment. Inpatient rehab allows patients to focus exclusively on doing the work to recover from addiction to drugs and alcohol, as well as any co-occurring disorders.

Why Choose Inpatient Rehab?

Residential treatment is a full-time, live-in program. Rehab patients participate in individual therapy, group sessions, holistic care, and aftercare planning 7 days a week. This intensive focus gives patients a stronger chance at successful recovery after discharge.

FAQs About Residential Treatment

How do I know if residential rehab is right for me?

Residential rehab is right for you if you need a structured, substance-free environment and an intensive therapeutic program to address the underlying causes of your drug or alcohol addiction. Residential treatment is especially beneficial for people who require medication-assisted treatment and dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders.

Another factor to consider is your previous attempts at sobriety. A history of relapse, or if your substance use is worsening over time, is an indicator that inpatient rehab may be best for you. A residential addiction program can also be highly beneficial for people whose home life is a source of triggers or distractions, particularly other people who will continue their own substance use.

The difference between inpatient vs. outpatient rehab is the level of structure and intensiveness of care. Inpatient rehab provides immersive, full-time therapeutic care where you live on-site and engage in intensive daily therapy to address the psychological roots of addiction and build foundational sobriety skills.

Inpatient treatment is focused on initial stabilization, while outpatient care is centered on re-integration and sustaining long-term sobriety after the acute phase. During outpatient rehab, patients attend addiction therapy during the day while living at home or in a sober living arrangement.

One is not necessarily “better” than the other. Rather, inpatient and outpatient rehab are different steps on a continuum of care that gradually lessens in intensity as the person has more time in sobriety under their belt.

Whether 30 days of rehab is enough to sustain long-term sobriety depends on the severity of the addiction and the patient’s specific needs. Residential treatment is highly individualized and there is no fixed answer to how long rehab should last. A 30-day rehab program provides initial stabilization and detoxification, intensive addiction therapy and group work, and a structured, supportive environment in which patients can establish new routines and habits that they can apply to their new life in recovery.

In the medical community, addiction is classified as a cyclical, chronic disease marked by episodes of treatment and relapse. Research consistently shows that longer participation in treatment is associated with significantly better long-term recovery outcomes and a higher likelihood of sustained sobriety. This is why many addiction rehabs provide treatment in increments of 30/60/90-day programming.

A 30-day rehab program is considered the baseline needed to break old habits and patterns, identify and address the underlying psychological causes of addiction, and learn the skills necessary to stay sober as they transition down to lower levels of care. Longer stays of 60 or 90 days allow even more time to work on co-occurring mental health conditions, develop robust coping mechanisms, and transition into aftercare. When considering 60 vs. 90 day rehab, factors such as work, school, family, and insurance coverage are important.

When you call Coastal Detox, our admissions and clinical team will discuss your goals for treatment and make arrangements for you to meet all your external obligations during treatment so you can stay for the length of time that is truly right for you.

If you relapse after rehab, there is nothing to be ashamed about. The best thing you can do is acknowledge the relapse, understand that relapse is a normal part of the disease of addiction, and reach out for help. At Coastal Detox, our patients are our family. You will never be judged or looked down on for relapsing. Our caring, compassionate staff have all been through relapse and recovery themselves, so they understand what you are going through and only want to help you succeed.

Depending on the severity of your relapse, you may need to re-admit to detox to ensure your medical safety. After that, you can transition to inpatient rehab or an outpatient program such as PHP or IOP, depending on your needs. There is no limit to the number of times you can go to rehab. The most important thing is to get the help you need re-commit to recovery. One of the primary goals of residential rehab is to teach you relapse prevention skills. These skills may include calling a sponsor or attending a group meeting, practicing self care and mindfulness, and using healthy coping mechanisms when you experience cravings or triggers. After rehab, a personalized aftercare plan will help reinforce the structure, routine, and relapse prevention skills you learned while in residential treatment. If you slip up and relapse, it’s OK. Just pick yourself back up and start again. We’ll be here to help you through it.

During the admissions process for rehab, we’ll start by asking you about your substance use and health history. This information is completely confidential and protected by HIPAA regulations. We need to know what substances you have been taking, how much and for how long, so that we can establish the appropriate medical care plan. We’ll ask you for your health insurance information or discuss other payment options if you don’t have health insurance. If we don’t take your insurance, we will refer you to one of our trusted partners who does.

Once we’ve verified your insurance or payment plan, we will check our bed availability and schedule your intake. We typically have availability for same-day rehab admissions. Our team can assist you with transportation and pick you up from the airport or public transit station if needed.

When you arrive at Coastal Detox, you will first meet with a member of our medical team for an evaluation. This will include a drug test and breathalyzer test. Again, these results are for our medical treatment purposes only and are kept strictly confidential. You should be completely honest when answering these questions, as it will give us the best information for establishing your care plan.

After completing your intake paperwork, we’ll give you a quick tour around the facility and show you to your room where you can rest and get settled.

Just about all addictive substances are treated in residential rehab, including polysubstance combinations and dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions. Residential rehab employs evidence-based treatment for drugs, including:

For some substances, such as stimulants and cannabis, rehab treatment will focus on addressing the strong psychological impulse to continue using, primarily through various addiction therapies, recovery groups, and 12-Step programs. Addiction to substances like alcohol, opioids, and benzos, require medication-assisted treatment to break the cycle of physical dependence and withdrawal while keeping the patient safe and comfortable. MAT can be utilized long-term to minimize cravings and reduce the likelihood of relapse.

Measuring the success rates for residential addiction treatment is complex. Addiction is classified as a chronic disease that cycles between periods of treatment, recovery, and relapse. Addiction rehab is not a “cure” but rather a means of managing the condition, giving patients the tools they need to lead healthy, vibrant lives.

Specific, numerical success rates can vary widely depending on the patient, the severity of the addiction, and the length of treatment. Research consistently shows that the longer a patient stays in residential treatment, the greater their likelihood of sustained sobriety. This is because residential rehab programs provide an intensive, structured environment that focuses on breaking the cycle of substance use and teaching essential relapse prevention skills.

Coastal Detox further enhances success by offering culturally competent care for sensitive populations. We provide targeted, low-barrier support for groups like LGBTQ+ people, Native Americans, and women (especially pregnant women and new moms), ensuring that treatment is individualized to meet their specific needs and circumstances and providing the best chance at successful recovery.

Yes, residential rehab treats anxiety, depression, and PTSD alongside addiction to drugs and alcohol. This approach is called dual diagnosis treatment and integrates addiction rehab with treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions.

In our residential treatment for mental health and addiction, the clinical team at Coastal Detox employs trauma-informed care and evidence-based therapies such as CBT and DBT to provide psychiatric support for a wide range of mental health concerns, including bipolar disorder, ADHD, depression, anxiety, PTSD, schizophrenia, and others. Dual diagnosis inpatient treatment allows the patient to understand how their mental health and addiction are intertwined, learn their triggers, establish coping mechanisms, and develop a self-care routine that keeps them structured and grounded in their recovery.

Yes, you can work remotely during residential treatment and still participate in the valuable therapeutic programming. Addiction rehab for professionals can be challenging. At Coastal Detox, our case managers can prioritize keeping your job during rehab and schedule dedicated phone and/or computer time for you to meet your professional obligations. Even in executive rehab, the priority is on treating the addiction so you can get back to the office stronger than ever. Your availability for meetings and assignments will be reduced so you can fully participate in the therapy you need, but we will do our best to support your professional needs so you don’t miss any critical deadlines.

Your employer will only know you went to rehab if you choose to disclose that information to them. By law, all residential rehab programs are strictly confidential and must adhere to HIPAA requirements. When you arrive at Coastal Detox and begin the intake process, you will complete a release of information form (ROI) that expressly names the people with whom we may share information about your treatment.

If you need time away from work to complete rehab, our medical team can provide your employer with a doctor’s note stating how long you need to be out without disclosing any details about where you are or the type of treatment facility you are in. Coastal Detox deeply values the privacy of our patients and operates within the rigorous requirements of healthcare licensing and accreditation, including compliance with all state and federal privacy laws.

There are many ways family members can support someone who is in residential rehab. Family plays a critical and active role in the recovery journey, and their support can significantly improve long-term outcomes. The most impactful way family members can offer support is by committing to their own healing and participating in the treatment process, particularly through family therapy. Family therapy is designed to heal the entire family unit by addressing the trauma, chaos, and communication breakdowns caused by substance use disorder.

Family therapy sessions at Coastal Detox help family members understand addiction as a chronic disease, identify and dismantle unhealthy dynamics like codependency and enabling behaviors, and learn to set firm, compassionate boundaries. Beyond structured therapy, supportive actions include educating oneself about addiction, practicing effective communication by using “I” statements, listening without judgment, and encouraging sober activities. By committing to addressing dysfunctional patterns and establishing a stable, nurturing home environment, the family creates a foundation that reduces the risk of relapse and fosters the patient’s sustained sobriety.

Yes, Coastal Detox of Southern California allows couples to move through detox and residential treatment together, while still receiving individualized treatment that meets the needs of each person in the couple. Drug and alcohol abuse is frequently a common factor that brings couples together, but getting sober together and committing to recovery can be an important journey that solidifies their relationship. Having a supportive partner in sobriety can increase both people’s chances of remaining drug-free for years to come.

A typical day in residential treatment is very structured, with dedicated time for individual therapy, meals, medications, group therapy, outings, and personal reflection. At Coastal Detox, a typical day looks similar to the following:

  • Morning medications and check in with the medical team.
  • Light breakfast and optional gym workout or beach walk (for patients who are past the withdrawal phase and feel up to it).
  • One-on-one therapy with a clinical team.
  • Nutritious lunch, enjoyed as a community.
  • Opportunity for supervised, approved device use for checking in with work, school, home, etc.
  • Afternoon medications and medical check in.
  • Group therapy: Depending on the day, this will be a rotating schedule of 12-Step work, art or music therapy, Native healing therapies, mindfulness practice, and holistic therapies such as Reiki, yoga, massage, or equine therapy.
  • Snack and quiet time for reading, journaling, or approved device use.
  • Evening off-site recovery meeting in San Diego.
  • Nourishing dinner, evening medications, and wind down time before lights out.

This structure and repetition helps patients build a new routine to follow even as they step down to lower levels of outpatient treatment or aftercare. During the first 72 hours of rehab, patients may sit out some or all of the therapy sessions to focus on rest while they adjust to the environment and schedule. Every person’s needs are different, and the Coastal Detox team’s primary focus is on patient comfort and safety. We do like to show our residents that life in recovery can be fun, exciting, wholesome, and vibrant, so we frequently host weekend outings to enjoy everything that San Diego has to offer.

How much residential rehab costs with insurance depends on your specific insurance policy. When you call our admissions team, they will ask for your insurance information so they can instantly check your policy right over the phone and provide you the exact amount (if any) you will need to pay out of pocket. Or, if you’d prefer, you can fill out our online insurance verification form and a member of our team will contact you once we have your policy details. Every policy has different copay and deductible amounts, and limits to out-of-pocket premiums. Once we know your insurance provider and policy number, we’ll be able to see how close you are to meeting your deductible and what that means for your total cost.
