Levels of Care at Coastal Detox

Coastal Detox provides the critical first steps in addiction treatment: residential detox and inpatient rehab. We are fully licensed and medically equipped to treat complex cases, multi-substance abuse, and co-occurring mental health conditions. Our clinicians practice a variety of evidence-based therapies, individual counseling, and group work to help patients address the underlying causes of addiction and lay the foundation for lasting sobriety.

Patients love Coastal Detox for its holistic methods, focus on fitness and wellness, and weekly outdoor excursions, including hiking, golf, surfing, and equine therapy.

Medical Detox

Coastal Detox is a Joint Commission accredited medical detox facility. We specialize in treating complex medical cases, including detox during pregnancy, and multi-substance addiction and dependence. Our goal is to safely and comfortably manage the physical withdrawal process from drugs and alcohol, so patients are ready to transition to rehab therapy.

Key Features:

Residential Treatment

Our residential treatment program offers comprehensive, immersive inpatient rehab. Patients live on-site in a structured, substance-free environment, typically for 30 days up to 60 or 90 days. Patients engage in intensive individual and group therapy sessions focused on addressing the underlying causes of addiction, co-occurring mental health issues, and trauma.

  • Immersive Care: Patients live in our San Diego facility, enjoying chef-prepared meals, structured routine, optional private bedrooms, and the emotional support of our resident dogs.
  • Medication-Assisted Therapy: Patients requiring ongoing medication management seamlessly transition from medical detox to MAT, meeting regularly with our healthcare director to adjust dosage and scheduling as needed.
  • Holistic Therapies: We believe in healing the whole patient — body, mind, and spirit. Patients benefit from mindfulness practices including yoga, breathwork, and meditation, and physical wellness activities such as hiking, equine therapy, gym training, and beach days. We also incorporate expressive music and art therapies, as well as nutritional education and career counseling.
  • Culturally Competent Care for Sensitive Populations: Coastal Detox offers targeted, low-barrier care for population groups especially sensitive to substance use disorders, including Native Americans, LGBTQ+ people, women (especially pregnant women and new moms), couples, and trauma survivors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which level of care I need?

To know which level of care you need, the Coastal Detox admissions and clinical team will need to assess your personal addiction history. Placement is largely based on your substance of abuse and risk of severe withdrawal symptoms. To determine the appropriate level of care at Coastal Detox, our admissions process evaluates several critical factors, including:

  • Substance of abuse,
  • Substance use severity,
  • Withdrawal risk,
  • Mental health conditions,
  • Relapse history,
  • Home environment,
  • And medical needs.

Based on this comprehensive assessment, patients are placed into either medical detox or residential treatment, ensuring the placement prioritizes safety and clinical appropriateness.

You may be able to go directly into residential treatment without detox, depending on your substance of abuse and risk for withdrawal. Many patients do require medical detox first to ensure their safety. Patients who are medically stable with minimal risk of complicated withdrawal syndrome may begin their residential treatment immediately. Our clinical assessment and intake evaluation will determine the safest and most appropriate starting point for each patient.

How long each level of care lasts varies for each patient and how well they respond to treatment. Typically the detox timeline lasts anywhere from 5 to 10 days, depending on the substance(s) that were being abused. Stimulants like meth, cocaine, and prescription medications like Adderall tend to have shorter withdrawal timelines and require less (or sometimes no) time in detox. Other substances, especially opioids, alcohol, and benzodiazepines (benzos), have longer detox timelines and greater risk of dangerous side effects during withdrawal, so those patients tend to stay in medical detox for more time.

Residential addiction treatment typically lasts 30 to 60 days, with some patients staying for as long as 90 days. The appropriate length of treatment will depend on each patient’s personal addiction history, but studies consistently show that longer treatment times have better outcomes and lower incidence of relapse within one year of treatment.

After completing residential treatment, patients may step down to lower levels of aftercare that may include sober living, intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), partial hospitalization programs (PHPs), regular 12-step meetings, and/or continuing visits with a dedicated addiction therapist. Aftercare recommendations vary by patient. Most people living in recovery continue long-term aftercare in some form.

After inpatient rehab, patients meet with the clinical assessment team to develop a personalized aftercare plan. This plan will take into consideration important factors such as the patient’s history of relapse and risk factors for relapse, home environment, support network, potential triggers, and need for ongoing maintenance medications.

Patients will receive referrals to PHP or IOP outpatient care at one of Coastal Detox’s trusted partners, and/or placement in a sober living environment that meets their needs. We will also create a plan for continuing therapy, relapse prevention, group meeting attendance, obtaining a sponsor, and participation in our alumni events to stay in touch with the Coastal Detox recovery community.

No, Coastal Detox does not offer outpatient treatment. We currently specialize in detox and residential care. Our team coordinates referrals to trusted PHP and IOP partners after discharge. We also arrange sober living placement and transportation for patients when they are ready to leave our care and step down to less intensive treatment. Every patient receives counseling and a personalized aftercare plan for continuing their recovery from addiction.

Medical detox is the essential first step of the recovery journey, providing medically supervised withdrawal management. Throughout the process, our patients benefit from 24/7 monitoring by a team of licensed professionals. We utilize FDA-approved medications to ensure comfort and safety while mitigating withdrawal symptoms. This clinical stabilization is designed to prepare each individual for the transition into ongoing residential treatment.

Yes, Coastal Detox uses medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in its drug and alcohol treatment programs. MAT is an evidence-based, comprehensive approach to treating substance use disorders, primarily for opioid and alcohol dependence. It combines counseling and behavioral therapies with FDA-approved medications that address the chemical imbalances caused by long-term substance use. These medications are utilized to provide crucial withdrawal support, stabilize the patient’s system, and significantly reduce or eliminate intense physiological cravings. The decision on which medication(s) to use is based on a thorough clinical evaluation, ensuring an individualized treatment plan that supports a stable foundation for long-term recovery.

Residential inpatient rehab is a comprehensive form of addiction treatment where patients live onsite in a secure, substance-free environment. This level of care provides a highly structured daily schedule that integrates intensive clinical therapy, 24/7 medical support, and a variety of holistic activities designed to treat the whole person. By removing outside triggers and providing constant professional supervision, residential rehab allows individuals to focus entirely on their recovery and clinical stabilization.

There are many therapies included in residential addiction treatment. Coastal Detox employs a comprehensive, evidence-based approach designed to heal the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Treatment plans are individualized, integrating both traditional and holistic methods.

The core therapies included in residential treatment at Coastal Detox include:

The difference between detox and rehab is that detox focuses on stabilizing the physical body while the drugs and alcohol leave the person’s system, while rehab treats the underlying causes for the addiction and teaches the person new, healthier ways to identify and cope with those causes.

Detox is the first step of addiction treatment. It typically lasts 5 to 10 days, depending on the substance(s) of abuse, and prioritizes rest, healing, and safety. Patients receive 24/7 medical supervision, and FDA-approved medications to ease withdrawal symptoms. During this time, patients are not required to participate in any individual or group therapy, or off-site excursions unless they feel up to it.

Once detox has been completed and the person is no longer experiencing withdrawal symptoms, they transition to rehab, which is where the real work of addiction treatment begins. Residential rehab usually lasts anywhere from 30 to 90 days and includes an intensive regimen of individual, group, and holistic therapies designed to address the underlying causes of addiction and build the essential skills needed for long-term sobriety.

Yes, Coastal Detox treats co-occurring mental health disorders in our dual diagnosis treatment program. Substance use disorder frequently co-occurs with one or more mental health disorders, and it’s critical to treat both conditions simultaneously. Our expert team of clinicians and therapists helps patients address conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, and BPD with an integrated treatment approach that focuses on practical skills and coping techniques patients can lean on after leaving residential treatment.

Yes, Coastal Detox is one of the few rehabs where couples can attend treatment together. Our couples detox program allows romantic partners to share a private room and receive couples-focused therapy that strengthens their relationship as well as their foundation for life in recovery. Each member of the couple receives their own individualized treatment plan and medical supervision based on their health and substance use history. Once couples complete detox they can seamlessly transition to residential treatment and continue to work on their sobriety goals as partners.

A typical day in residential rehab at Coastal Detox includes multiple individual and group therapy sessions, chef-prepared meals and snacks enjoyed as a community, off-site excursions, and time for private reflection. A typical weekday looks like the following:

  • Morning medications & visit with the medical care team.
  • Light breakfast and optional gym workout or beach walk for patients who feel up to it.
  • Individual therapy: Dedicated one-on-one time with a clinical therapist, followed by a progress check-in with your case manager.
  • Lunch: A nutritious meal prepared by our in-house chef, enjoyed as a community with some unstructured time for social interaction.
  • Afternoon medications & check-in with the medical team if needed.
  • Afternoon group therapy: A chance for patients to share their feelings and experiences in a safe, supportive setting and practice the skills they learn in individual sessions. These sessions are facilitated by a therapist in a rotating format that includes 12-step work, expressive therapies, native healing practices, and holistic therapies.
  • Snack and quiet time for reading, journaling, or meditation. On certain days, patients can optionally enjoy a massage, Reiki, or cupping therapy to help ground their recovery in their physical body.
  • Evening meeting: Patients are transported off-site to participate in a local recovery group meeting. This is an opportunity to meet sober people around San Diego and establish a routine to continue after leaving rehab.
  • Dinner and evening wind-down: Another chef-prepared meal, any evening medications prescribed by our medical team, and quiet time for reading, journaling, or meditation before lights out.

Weekend days include more off-site excursions intended to highlight the rich and vibrant activities patients can enjoy as part of their sober lifestyle. These may include local attractions and community events, outdoor picnics with our alumni and recovery community, or outdoor sports such as golf, hiking, or surfing for those who feel up to it. At Coastal Detox we believe in the healing power of long, sunny days spent outside and enjoying the best that San Diego has to offer.

Yes, most major insurance providers cover at least part of the cost of both detox and rehab. The exact amount of your coverage depends on your specific policy and type of plan. Coastal Detox offers free, no-obligation insurance verification in a secure online form, or if you call our admissions team they can verify your insurance instantly right over the phone.

Yes, Coastal Detox typically has availability for same-day admissions to both our detox and residential programs. Call our admissions line any time 24/7 to start your intake process.

In general, phone use is not allowed during detox and residential treatment at Coastal Detox. We understand, however, that some patients may be required to check in either with work, children, court or social workers, or external medical providers. For these circumstances we set aside dedicated, supervised phone use hours to ensure patients are fulfilling their external obligations while in treatment.

When packing for detox or rehab, you should bring about a week’s worth of comfortable casual clothing, plus sleepwear and activewear for excursions. Please bring one pair of sturdy, closed-toed shoes and a hoodie or light jacket (San Diego’s weather is fairly mild year-round but it can get cool in the evenings). Additionally, we recommend you bring essentials such as:

  • ID and health insurance cards
  • Any prescription medications
  • Toiletries such as toothbrush, hair comb, deodorant, lip balm, feminine hygiene products, and contact lenses. All products must be alcohol-free.
  • Personal items such as a favorite book, journal, family photo, stress ball, or fidget toy.

All items will be thoroughly inspected and may be stored in a secure location if needed.

Yes, family members are strongly encouraged to participate in addiction treatment, as this is an important support system to lean on after leaving rehab. Coastal Detox counselors will facilitate family therapy sessions to help strengthen communication, rebuild trust, set healthy boundaries, overcome enabling or codependent behavior, and practice accountability. Family members are also encouraged to participate in the discharge process and aftercare planning so they continue to be part of the patient’s recovery as they step down to less intensive care..
