Coastal Detox of Southern California
Coastal Detox of Southern California recognizes that effective addiction treatment must address the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Our San Diego residential detox and rehab programs feature evidence-based creative expression therapies, including both art therapy and music therapy.Â
These weekly sessions provide patients with essential tools for emotional processing, communication, and self-discovery. These benefits can be difficult to achieve through traditional talk therapy alone, which is why Coastal Detox utilizes a holistic, whole-person approach to treating drug and alcohol addiction.
Art therapy utilizes the creative process of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It is a non-verbal method of communication, which is particularly helpful for people who struggle to articulate complex feelings related to their addiction, trauma, and recovery journey.
Through art, patients experience:
Art therapy at Coastal Detox of Southern California is led by local San Diego artist and educator Hannah Rowan. Educated at the State University of New York at Albany, her approach emphasizes process over perfection, offering patients a safe space to explore creativity, build confidence, and reconnect with themselves.
Coastal Detox’s music therapy program is delivered in partnership with the nationally recognized non-profit organization, Rock to Recovery. This unique collaboration brings professional musicians, who are often in recovery themselves, into our facility to lead dynamic, hands-on music sessions.
The Rock to Recovery sessions are designed to be fun, accessible, and therapeutic, focusing on the creative process rather than musical skill.
Music therapy, especially through the Rock to Recovery model, serves as a powerful non-verbal tool for emotional regulation and mental health:
Founded by Wesley Geer, former guitarist for Korn and Hed PE, Rock to Recovery is a non-profit organization dedicated to healing people from mental health and substance use disorders through the therapeutic power of playing music. The organization’s mission is to provide an expressive, non-verbal outlet that helps patients process difficult emotions, build self-esteem, and create positive, sustainable coping mechanisms.
By connecting professional musicians, many of whom are in recovery themselves, with individuals in treatment, Rock to Recovery creates a uniquely empathetic and empowering environment focused on collaborative creation and healing.
Coastal Detox of Southern California integrates these therapies into an individualized treatment plan, ensuring they complement traditional therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). By combining the expressive power of art and music with proven clinical techniques and a holistic approach, we help patients not only achieve sobriety but also build a richer, more meaningful life in recovery.
Every person’s path to recovery is unique, and Coastal Detox is San Diego’s trusted partner for every step of the journey. Call today — Our admissions team is available 24/7.
