Getting treatment for drug or alcohol addiction is a difficult decision, so it’s helpful to know what to expect on the first day of rehab. It’s completely normal to feel scared on your first day.
At Coastal Detox of Southern California, we believe that transparency is the first step toward building the trust necessary for recovery. Our goal is to ensure you feel safe, respected, and fully informed from the moment you walk through our doors.
A Judgment-Free Welcome
Whether you have been sober for days or have used just before your arrival, there is no judgment or shame at Coastal Detox. Our medical team has extensive experience, and many members of our staff are in recovery themselves, so they’ve been in your exact position themselves.
Comprehensive Intake Process
Your first day is primarily focused on the intake and assessment process to ensure we have a complete picture of your health.
Medical and Psychological Assessment
Upon arrival, you will undergo a comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation. This assessment allows our clinical team to understand your substance use history and identify any co-occurring mental or physical health conditions. This information is vital for creating an individualized treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs.
The Role of Medical Testing
As part of your evaluation, we conduct a breathalyzer and a drug test. These tests are not punitive; they are essential clinical tools that help us ensure your safety. In an era where counterfeit substances often contain highly potent opioids like fentanyl, it is critical for our medical team to know exactly what is in your system. This allows us to establish the correct detox protocol and prescribe the necessary medications to keep you comfortable and safe during withdrawal.
Logistics and Safety
Once the clinical assessments are complete, we focus on helping you settle into the facility safely.
- Belongings Search: All personal items brought into the facility are thoroughly searched for prohibited substances and cataloged for security.
- Device Management: To help you focus on your healing, phones and laptops are stored in secure lockers. Use of these devices is typically supervised and approved on a case-by-case basis for essential obligations.
- Facility Orientation: You will receive a tour of the facility and an orientation regarding our rules and daily routines.
Prioritizing Rest and Stabilization
Most patients arrive feeling physically unwell, and our immediate priority is your comfort. After your medical evaluation, you will likely receive your first round of medications and be encouraged to rest. Depending on your history, the first three to five days are often spent in bed while your body stabilizes.
We do not expect you to dive into group therapy or intensive programming immediately. We wait until you are physically stable and your energy levels have begun to normalize before you begin the active therapeutic phase of your recovery.
Protecting Your Privacy
Your privacy is a cornerstone of our care. All residential programs at Coastal Detox adhere to strict HIPAA requirements. Your medical information and the fact that you are in treatment cannot be disclosed to anyone—including your employer—without your explicit consent via a Release of Information (ROI) form.
Entering rehab is a significant transition, but you do not have to navigate it alone. Our team is here to walk alongside you every step of the way, starting from day one. To learn more about the intake process or to start your admission, call us any time day or night.
