Recovery Isn’t Just Something We Teach

Recovery is deeply personal, but no one should have to navigate it alone. At Coastal Detox, the leaders who guide our facility know that journey firsthand.

Recently, our team celebrated four significant sober anniversaries:

These milestones represent much more than personal achievements. They reflect a foundational ethos that shapes how we support individuals and families entering treatment. People seeking help deserve to know that those guiding them understand the recovery process from multiple dimensions—both professionally and personally.

Lived experience does not automatically make someone inherently better at delivering addiction care. Clinical training, medical supervision, evidence-based behavioral healthcare, and rigorous operational standards are indispensable. When combined with professional credentials, personal recovery experience adds a layer of empathy, insight, and authenticity that can’t be learned in an academic setting.

What Does ‘Lived Experience’ Mean in Addiction Treatment?

In behavioral health, “lived experience” refers to firsthand knowledge gained through direct personal involvement in substance use recovery. In a treatment environment, this encompasses:

  • Navigating early sobriety and overcoming initial physical and emotional barriers.
  • Actively participating in long-term recovery communities and peer networks.
  • Doing the daily work of rebuilding routines, personal relationships, and a sense of life purpose.
  • Guiding others through similar journeys with sustained empathy and guidance.

Four distinct journeys. Four unique perspectives. One dedicated commitment to guiding individuals toward lasting health and dignity.

Lived Experience and Clinical Expertise Work Together

At Coastal Detox, we rely on a multidisciplinary treatment model. Effective addiction treatment is never built on a single approach. It requires the coordinated expertise of medical professionals, licensed therapists, behavioral health specialists, and experienced recovery leaders. Lived experience does not replace clinical care. Different forms of expertise elevate and complement one another.

Her personal experience provides an empathetic foundation for understanding patient challenges, fostering effective therapeutic relationships, and guiding patients toward sustainable health and recovery.

Taken together, these distinct milestones highlight a fundamental reality that recovery looks different for everyone. Sobriety doesn’t follow any single predefined timeline or standardized path.

Why Lived Recovery Experience Can Matter to Patients

Entering medical detox or residential treatment can feel daunting, and long-term sobriety may initially feel abstract or out of reach.

It Can Help Patients See What’s Possible

Interacting with leaders who have sustained long-term recovery offers tangible proof that:

  • Recovery is sustainable over years and decades.
  • Meaningful life changes are possible after severe substance use challenges.
  • Sobriety opens doors to personal fulfillment, professional growth, and restored family connections.
  • A person’s true identity extends far beyond a clinical diagnosis or past struggles.

It Can Create a Different Kind of Connection

Patients often feel more comfortable opening up to team members who have walked a similar path. While professional clinicians offer essential therapeutic tools, leaders with lived experience offer a unique point of relatable human connection that helps dissolve fear and mistrust during early care.

It Can Bring Authenticity to Conversations About Recovery

Leaders in recovery can speak with genuine understanding about:

  • Navigating vulnerability, fear, and stigma during early treatment.
  • Asking for help when feeling overwhelmed.
  • Taking recovery one day at a time while building solid foundations for the future.

It Can Reinforce Hope During Difficult Moments

When detox or treatment feels challenging, seeing leadership rooted in recovery serves as a simple, powerful reminder:

“You don’t have to know exactly how this story ends yet. You just have to take the next step.”

Why Recovery Experience Matters to the Coastal Detox Team

Lived experience benefits patients and plays a critical role in shaping our internal organization and staff culture.

Recovery Is Part of the Culture, Not Just a Clinical Topic

Having leaders with recovery backgrounds reinforces a workplace culture built around:

  • Compassion and mutual respect
  • Personal accountability and integrity
  • Service-driven care and unwavering hope
  • Preserving individual dignity throughout treatment

Leaders Can Model the Principles They Ask Others to Practice

Recovery requires practicing core life principles. Leaders who model honesty, healthy boundaries, self-awareness, and continuous growth set an authentic standard for both staff and patients.

It Can Help Staff Understand the Human Side of Addiction

Even for highly educated clinical professionals, lived experience adds essential depth to understanding what it feels like to seek help, why building trust takes time, and why maintaining client dignity is paramount.

Lived Experience Doesn’t Mean Doing It Alone

Personal recovery experience is one part of a comprehensive care model. At Coastal Detox, we believe true healing requires a complete multidisciplinary approach, including:

Personal experience and clinical science are not competing methodologies—when combined effectively, they provide a powerful, well-rounded foundation for lasting recovery.

What This Means for Someone Entering Treatment

If you or a loved one are considering treatment, it is natural to ask:

  • Will I be judged?
  • Will the staff understand what I am going through?
  • Is long-term recovery actually realistic for me?

At Coastal Detox, our goal is to offer top-tier medical care in an environment populated by people who genuinely know that recovery is possible because they are living it.

Recovery Is Bigger Than Sobriety

Sobriety is the starting point, but recovery encompasses entire life transformations:

  • Rebuilding trust with family and loved ones
  • Discovering new purpose and meaningful work
  • Developing healthy emotional coping mechanisms
  • Building a stable, fulfilling life worth protecting

The sobriety milestones achieved by our leadership team are more than cumulative numbers. They represent lives continuously evolving in recovery, service, and growth.

Celebrating the People Who Lead by Example

We celebrate Nina, Phil, Jeff, and Kay for their collective 41 years of recovery—not simply for the number of days passed, but for the resilience, dedication, and compassionate service those years represent.

At Coastal Detox, we believe hope is most powerful when it is lived, not simply promised.

Phil Castagnola

Case Manager

Philip Castagnola, SUDCC, is the Program Director for Coastal Detox of Southern California. He holds an Associate’s in Science and Certification in Alcohol and Other Drug Studies from San Diego City College.

Phil has over 15 years of continuous sobriety and is an active Sponsor in the San Diego Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) community. He struggled with substance abuse issues throughout his youth. He started using drugs at the age of 15, having been raised in an environment that normalized heavy drug and alcohol use. He spent a lot of time in and out of various rehab programs before being incarcerated in federal prison, which is where he finally completed an 18-month treatment program and used that time to work the 12 Steps.

After completing his sentence and serving his debt to society, he vowed to continue to give back to others who are going through similar hardships. Phil is passionated about sharing his experience with openness and honesty so that others may find hope for their future and find the strength to break free from the bondage of addiction.

In addition to a successful career as a certified counselor, Phil is also reconnecting with his passion for surfing. Phil surfed professionally in competitions for a few years in his early 20s and even owned his own surf shop (Select Surf Shop) before losing everything to his addiction. Now in his sobriety he is able to once again surf recreationally and in contests, showing that it’s never too late to reclaim your own narrative, overcome substance use disorder, and pursue the life you were always meant to have.

Kay Saffe, LPCC

Clinical Director

Kay Saffe, LPCC,  is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and Clinical Director at Coastal Detox of Southern California. She holds a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of San Diego and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from New College of Florida.

Kay grew up in Miami, Florida and is a first generation American with Argentinian roots. Throughout her youth, she struggled with drinking and substance abuse. Today, she has been in recovery for over 4 years and strives to prioritize her spiritual, mental, and physical health.

A lifelong athlete and ocean lover, she moved to San Diego to pursue her Master’s degree and progress her surfing. She has spent years working as a surf instructor and therapist, working with local non-profits that treat at risk individuals and families in both English and Spanish. She incorporates a mindful and holistic approach to therapy. She is passionate about positive psychology and helping others through their recovery journey.

Jeff Swem, SUDCC

Director of Operations

Jeff Swem, SUDCC, is a Substance Use Disorder Certified Counselor and the Director of Operations at Coastal Detox of Southern California. He holds an Associate’s in Science and Certification in Alcohol and Other Drug Studies from San Diego City College.

Jeff has 6 years of continuous sobriety and is active in the San Diego Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) community. Jeff struggled with substance abuse from a young age and endured some harrowing, near-death experiences before “settling down” into a career as a professional beer brewer. It was during the COVID outbreak that he surrendered to his higher power and made the choice to get sober for good.

After completing an inpatient rehab program and IOP aftercare, Jeff quit the brewing industry and pivoted to become a Substance Use Disorder Certified Counselor so he could surround himself with a caring and supportive sober community and help others who struggle with addiction by leading through example and sharing his personal experience.

Born and raised in San Diego, Jeff is married to his wife of 25 years. They have a son and daughter together, and thanks to the 12 Steps and a successful career at Coastal Detox, Jeff is able to be fully present for them every day, be a positive role model, and show them how it is possible to thrive in recovery.
