Art and Music Addiction Therapy in San Diego

Coastal Detox of Southern California

Coastal Detox of Southern California recognizes that effective addiction treatment must address the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Our San Diego residential detox and rehab programs feature evidence-based creative expression therapies, including both art therapy and music therapy.

These weekly sessions provide patients with essential tools for emotional processing, communication, and self-discovery. These benefits can be difficult to achieve through traditional talk therapy alone, which is why Coastal Detox utilizes a holistic, whole-person approach to treating drug and alcohol addiction.

Art Therapy at Coastal Detox

Art therapy utilizes the creative process of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It is a non-verbal method of communication, which is particularly helpful for people who struggle to articulate complex feelings related to their addiction, trauma, and recovery journey.

Through art, patients experience:

  • Non-Judgmental Expression: Patients are encouraged to use various materials—paint, clay, collage, drawing—to visually represent their feelings, fears, and hopes without the pressure of finding the “right” words.
  • Trauma Processing: Art can serve as a safe, distanced way for patients to explore and process past traumas that contribute to substance use disorders.
  • Self-Discovery and Identity: Creating art helps patients connect with their inner self, rediscover passions, and build a positive self-identity separate from their addiction.
  • Stress and Anxiety Reduction: The act of creation is inherently meditative and therapeutic, lowering cortisol levels and promoting relaxation.

Benefits of Art Therapy in Rehab

  1. Emotional Release: Provides a safe outlet for anger, grief, and other intense emotions.
  2. Improved Communication: Offers a visual language to share feelings with therapists and peers.
  3. Increased Self-Awareness: Patients gain insight into behavioral patterns and triggers reflected in their artwork.
  4. Enhanced Problem-Solving: The creative process encourages flexible thinking and finding new solutions.

About the Therapist

Art therapy at Coastal Detox of Southern California is led by local San Diego artist and educator Hannah Rowan. Educated at the State University of New York at Albany, her approach emphasizes process over perfection, offering patients a safe space to explore creativity, build confidence, and reconnect with themselves.

‘Rock to Recovery’ Music Therapy Sessions

Coastal Detox’s music therapy program is delivered in partnership with the nationally recognized non-profit organization, Rock to Recovery. This unique collaboration brings professional musicians, who are often in recovery themselves, into our facility to lead dynamic, hands-on music sessions.

What Happens in a Session?

The Rock to Recovery sessions are designed to be fun, accessible, and therapeutic, focusing on the creative process rather than musical skill.

  • Collaborative Songwriting: Patients work together to create and perform original songs. This collaborative effort fosters teamwork, communication, and mutual support among peers.
  • Instrument Exploration: No musical experience is required. Patients are encouraged to pick up an instrument (guitars, bass, drums, keyboards) and simply play. The focus is on emotional expression and releasing pent-up energy through sound.
  • Performance and Validation: Performing their creation, even just for the group, provides a powerful sense of accomplishment, boosts self-esteem, and offers a positive, healthy way to experience vulnerability and acceptance.

Impact of Music Therapy

Music therapy, especially through the Rock to Recovery model, serves as a powerful non-verbal tool for emotional regulation and mental health:

  • Immediate Emotional Release: The physical act of playing an instrument and making loud music can be incredibly cathartic, helping patients process frustration, anger, or grief.
  • Community Building: Creating music together breaks down isolation and fosters a strong sense of community, a critical component of successful addiction recovery.
  • Alternative Coping Skills: Patients learn to channel stress, anxiety, and cravings into creative expression, developing a positive and sustainable coping mechanism to use long after treatment ends.

About Rock to Recovery

Founded by Wesley Geer, former guitarist for Korn and Hed PE, Rock to Recovery is a non-profit organization dedicated to healing people from mental health and substance use disorders through the therapeutic power of playing music. The organization’s mission is to provide an expressive, non-verbal outlet that helps patients process difficult emotions, build self-esteem, and create positive, sustainable coping mechanisms.

By connecting professional musicians, many of whom are in recovery themselves, with individuals in treatment, Rock to Recovery creates a uniquely empathetic and empowering environment focused on collaborative creation and healing.
